APOS BI Tools Used:
APOS Instance Manager, Object Manager, and

Background:
The mission of M. D. Anderson Cancer Center
is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation,
and the world through outstanding programs
that integrate patient care, research and
prevention, and through education for
undergraduate and graduate students,
trainees, professionals, employees and the
public.
Challenge:
The BusinessObjects Enterprise
Administration Group at M. D. Anderson
Cancer Center provides each department of
the institution with the reporting data on
bed levels, patient scheduling, financials
etc. M. D. Anderson Cancer Center was looking
at bursting information from the BusinessObjects Enterprise system while
controlling sensitive information and who
had access to it. They were also looking to
solve some maintenance issues and address
platform stability concerns.
Solution:
“The APOS tools have helped us manage the
BusinessObjects Enterprise system. They
solved the
business issues that we were trying to solve
and they are making our lives a bit easier –
that is the biggest benefit,” Lance
declared.
Instance Manager helps monitor
system performance. It enables quick and
easy identification of the number of reports
currently running, completed successfully,
failed or pending. It identifies the name of
the report and its location, how long the
report took to run and reason for failure.
Groups of reports can be held, released,
deleted or rescheduled in bulk. “The APOS
Instance Manager tool has had a real impact
with system failures and database issues.
There are about 5,000 to 6,000 reports to
reschedule if anything goes wrong. Instance
Manager makes system failures not so
catastrophic, “commented Lance.
Object Manager addresses platform
maintenance concerns. It allows them to
perform bulk maintenance of objects instead
of using the Central Management Console one
object at a time. “Object Manager is very
beneficial in performing audits on our
system as far as older objects that are not
being used. It is an easy way of capturing
an entire set of reports and taking them off
line,” states Lance.
