BACKGROUND:
Bord Gáis Éireann (Bord Gáis) was established in 1976 and is a commercial State body operating in the Irish energy industry. With over 630,000 gas and electricity customers and a turnover in 2008 of €1,379 million, Bord Gáis employs approximately 900 staff and is headquartered in Cork, Ireland.
For many, Bord Gáis would be synonymous with natural gas. However, the structure of the energy industry has changed significantly since the introduction of market liberalisation and Bord Gáis now has a variety of roles within the gas industry in Ireland. In addition, Bord Gáis has expanded beyond its original base into the electricity supply market. Bord Gáis has two main businesses – Networks and Energy.
CHALLENGE:
Bord Gáis implemented an Enterprise-wide Data Warehouse with SAP BusinessObjects XI as the reporting tool. Complex SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence reports have been developed which are critical to the financial month end close.
The challenge that Bord Gáis faced was to ensure that they have a backup of the reports at all times, and that they can recover archived versions of the reports if necessary.
SOLUTION:
Bord Gáis set out to look for a product that would meet their requirements and their evaluation process deemed that APOS Storage Center was the best product for them.
“Without APOS Storage Center there was no simple way to restore just one file in the SAP BusinessObjects repository. Now we have an application that allows the selection of individual folders and files for backup. Different rules regarding frequency and number of backups to store can be easily configured for each object,” explained Dave Cullinane, Business Intelligence Delivery Manager at Bord Gáis. “It is vital that we know that all reports are archived in the event that we need to restore to an older version. There would be significant reputational damage and cost if we were unable to restore. While it is not possible to quantify the ROI, it is significant.”
WHY APOS?
“The implementation of Storage Center went very smoothly and APOS support staff were very co-operative and helpful with any issues that we had,” stated Dave Cullinane. “Our relationship with APOS is excellent and we have full confidence that we can restore not just business critical reports, but any end-user report that was inadvertently deleted or overwritten.”
